William Vernold found his love of brewing and food chemistry through a chance job application. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, William was seeking work, and came across a job posting by Staffworks. Once he applied for the position, our placement personnel, always on the lookout for a “perfect fit”, suggested he also apply to a temporary brew staff position at Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, which looked to be more in line with his interests. He was quickly hired.
“I’ve always followed the advice, ‘If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life’”, William says. “So I make sure I do what I do best. This has been that kind of career path for me.” Vernold is inspired by nature, and that passion carries over into his current work as a brewer. As it turns out, he has a way with the science of food, and he brings that dedication to his job every day. He also takes his spirit of experimentation home with him.
“I love learning the chemistry and biology behind the processes, rather than following a recipe,” he adds. This has carried over into making cheese, wine, smoked meats and other foods at home.
William is very happy in his work, and sees that as a perfect balance for everything his employer has done for him. He knows that having the right person in a job increases everyone’s rewards.
